Welcome to Leiden

All you want to know about Leiden

Leiden

With its 118.000 inhabitants Leiden isn't a very big city but it's ancient city centre is really beautiful. There are many small canals and typical dutch houses. In the city centre you can find several old churches of which the st. Petes church might be the most import one. St. Pete. is the patron of Leiden and the keys to the gates of Heaven that he holds in his hands can also be found in the coat of the arms of Leiden.
As the story goes, the mayor of the city gave the the people of Leiden an option between never having to pay taxes anymore or getting a University. The citizens chose for a university and this university is now the oldest in all of the Netherlands.
The most important holiday in Leiden is celebrated on the 3rd of October when the end of the Spanish siege is celebrated. It's celebrated by an annual parade, a day of, a fair and eating the traditional food of herring, whitebread and hutspot (mashed potatoes, carrots and unions).

AEGEE-Leiden

AEGEE Leiden

AEGEE-Leiden has been one of the few founding locals that is still alive and we're proud of it! At the beginning AEGEE-Leiden was one of the bigger antenna's in the network with around 300 members, later on, around the year 2002 there were about 26 members left, so something had to change. Thanks to some great boards we had in the past years we are now back to 280 members and still growing. Most of our active members are active in commitees or so-called disputen (smaller groups within AEGEE-Leiden). Our committees are responsible for several parts of our antenna, such as the P.R., Summer University or local membersweekends to other antennas. There is also a weekly social drink at the center of Leiden that we will go to during the PRES.
This year is a special year since we and AEGEE-Europe are becoming 25, because of this we are very happy to organize the spring AGORA 2010!
